A major HLF-funded project for the London Borough of Enfield. Restoration of the main building including the insertion of a new lift and main stair, reinstatement of original room layouts, new staff accommodation and glass covering to internal courtyard to create a additional public space and a link with the ancillary accommodation. Rationalisation of circulation to the Stable Courtyard buildings, Café and Restaurant. Essential repairs to external fabric. The new main stair and lift are the centrepiece of the project, providing full access for wheelchair users to all four floors and restoring the original circulation patterns by returning the stair to its original configuration – the reverse of the present Victorian stair. It was necessary to assemble a strong case to justify such a major change to English Heritage.
