Opened in 1863, the Subway linked the newly constructed High Level Station to the iconic Crystal Palace, passing below Crystal Palace Parade. The Subway survived the fire that destroyed the Palace in 1936 but, without a use, it became increasingly derelict. It was Listed grade II* in 1972. From the late 1970s, local groups campaigned for its preservation and in 2019 Bromley Council, in partnership with the Friends of Crystal Palace Subway, secured significant grants from the SIP fund and Historic England, enabled Phase 1 of the restoration project to commence. This was none too soon as the building, was by then, in a precarious state. The practice’s multidisciplinary team was appointed in 2020 to restore the Subway, with a focus on the subterranean east courtyard. The project involved the stabilisation and restoration of the surviving structure, the re-creation of missing historic elements such as the huge sliding doors, the design of a new glazed roof, and the provision of lighting, power, and drainage.
