Listed Building - Grade II
Thomas de Cruz Architects & Designers
80-82 Chiswick High Road , Chiswick , LONDON , W4 1SY
Extension to, and renovation and refurbishment of, a Grade II Listed Queen Anne Dower house, parts of which date from 1534. The principle new element is a glazed kitchen extension. The existing kitchen was too small and the glazed extension allows the cooking area to be removed from the existing kitchen, which is then used for storage and utility. The kitchen extension features a large island for cooking and socialising. The highly glazed extension allows panoramic views of the garden and it is connected to the main body of the house by a glazed roof. Permission was only granted for the extension because it is tenuously connected to the original building. The planners initially resisted any form of extension because they said the previous Victorian pastiche extensions devalued the architecture of the original house. They were persuaded that the contemporary approach would enhanced the building.
