The property is a mid-terrace house of three storeys above the garage, with facade in yellow bricks, located on the southern side of Waveney Close. The project consists in the following alterations to the house. – merge of first floor and ground floor internal volumes, with associated conversion of the ground floor garage into habitable space; – conversion of loft into habitable space with introduction of rooflights on front and on rear elevation; – opening of circular window on existing gable. – removal of external stairs and introduction of new glazing. The design has been developed with the intention to provide minimum change to the existing external appearance of the building, yet addressing issues consequential to the changes of internal layout and the needs of the applicant. There will be no creation of additional volumes or footprint. Several design decisions developed from the need to create a house suitable for an elderly person with reduced mobility. The garage opening shall be retained but the gate will be converted to an anti-intrusion door combined with side glazing (frosted), to serve as entrance to the property from street level. The external stairs built in front of the property and leading to the current entrance are proposed for removal. The existing entrance door is to be replaced with a narrower fix glazing, sympathetically with the existing window at its immediate right. This would free space to park a car and remove a feature that would otherwise collect dirt and attract antisocial behavior. All fixtures will be replaced with energy efficient ones and designed to match the existing. Existing front elevation and current use Merging the volume of the garage with the storey above will allow to have an easier access to the kitchen and dining areas, which will be at the same level of the rear garden allowing an almost seamless access to it. This reflects in the rear elevation with taller french doors because the floor level in elevation will be lower, while the upper alignment of the fixtures will remain unchanged. A new glazing is proposed to span over the whole width between the red brick corners that frame a recessed part of the facade along the entire elevation.
