New Build
team 51.5 architects. London / Wuppertal
1a Peacock Yard , Iliffe Street , LONDON , SE17 3LH
Our aim is to provide a park for Rome in the 21st century. One that will reinforce and enhance the existing network of green spaces. The site will be covered with a forest of trees forming the boundary to the site where woods meet built areas. A variety of activities and green spaces will be excavated from the woodland, some already exist, others are new. The existing park area contains remnants of historical use. These will be excavated out of the forest to provide areas whose character reflect its original use in contrast to the other, newly discovered areas. ‚Pockets‘ are excavated out of the woodlands to service requirements of the adjacent communities; they contain some areas of a more private nature, such as garden allotments, orchards as well as areas for barbecues and picnics. The ‚islands‘ are spaces for specific activities, such as sports, archipelago gardens, education and entertainment. A service grid overlays the whole park and provides the parks infrastructure and services, such as water, electricity, toilets and space for gardeners. Each service point has the same generic base which can be adapted to give each point a local identity and function. The idea is to deliver a framework for the site in Centocelle. Every pocket and island would be planned by different architects, artists, sculptors and gardeners. the service grid the islands the pockets the fragments the forest the urban context.
