Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
The award-winning refurbishment of the Grade II listed 17th-century Bishop Wood’s Almshouses in Clapton transformed a historic building on the Heritage at Risk Register into five beautifully designed, energy-efficient residential units. Blending heritage conservation with modern living, the project preserved original features—like timber doors, sash windows, and roof details—while sensitively adapting unused spaces, including a former chapel and scullery. Stylish loft conversions, discreet modern amenities, and sustainable materials such as hemp insulation and lime render enhanced comfort and efficiency. With a landscaped communal courtyard and thoughtful design throughout, the scheme won the 2020 Hackney Design Award for Heritage and Restoration.
