Lake District National Park
Alteration to existing property
Impact at their core use sustainable innovation to accelerate positive social change and protect and preserve environmental integrity, whilst enhancing business performance. These values follow through into the design and build of their new base, Kelsick, nestled into the hills in Ambleside in the central Lake District National Park. Proposed was the conversion of the Edwardian, traditional Lakeland stone and former school building into flexible office spaces, break out rooms and company gathering space. New zinc clad extensions house reception areas, board and meeting rooms and a Walkers Café (Force) used by Impact staff and people passing by on the way to Wansfell and other local walks. As well as the conversion and extension of the main building, design concepts detailed the creation of large glass expanses to soak in the surrounding views. A mixture of fixed and sliding glass panes open onto courtyard spaces, which can be pulled back in summer months so inside and out can be merged into one space. Extensions to the west complement the existing Lakeland structure, with traditional roof shapes whilst contemporary lines and materials contrast with the existing vernacular. Offices at first floor level open out to flat roofed terraces allowing greater flexibility, and the more contemporary extensions have green/sedum roofs that merge into the surrounding landscape when viewed from neighbouring fells. Other buildings on site were renovated and repurposed, such as the former Headmasters House into site accommodation, and a staff facilities block.
