Completed in June 2025, the project involved precise interventions to activate previously underutilised spaces within the home and establish a stronger connection to the rear garden. In addition to a new external stair at the front, the project includes a comprehensive fit-out of the lower ground floor. A new extension accommodates a utility room, sink, WC, and cloakroom—all within a footprint of just 7m². Replacing a smaller structure on the same footprint, the extension works with the home’s split-level layout to draw light and views deep into the plan, reinforcing the link between house and garden. The extension features a hybrid construction method of timber frame with natural sandstone exterior shell, which was both distinctive and low in embodied carbon. Lintels and squared pilasters were specifically designed to allow for in-situ carving during future phases of the building’s life, conceiving the building as something which is evolving, rather than a finished object. We provided full RIBA services for this project, including liaising with planning and conservation officers on behalf of our clients and supporting with party wall notices and building regulations approvals.
