New Build
215-UNIT CANAL-SIDE RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN ALTRINCHAM, MANCHESTER. As an architect of Foster + Partners, Yat was part of the team which created the design for Budenberg Haus. The 215-unit residential project is developed by Urban Splash, a multiple award-winning developer famous for regenerating disused buildings and transforming derelict sites across the United Kingdom. Located on the site of the old Budenberg Gauge Factory in Altrincham, Manchester, Budenberg Haus consists of the old factory building refurbished by Arkheion Architects and two new residential blocks. The site is bounded by Woodfield Road, a quiet residential street, to the south and the Bridgewater Canal, the oldest canal in the United Kingdom, to the north. The two new U-shaped residential blocks are arranged on either side of a central garden and the refurbished building, with 315 car-parking spaces below. The blocks cantilever over the canal, rising gradually from three to seven storeys to link the scales of the low-rise buildings in Woodfield Road and that of the larger industrial units across the canal. Typical units are split-level apartments arranged in upper-lower pairs, both entered from a middle level walkway, creating efficient shared circulation spaces. The stepped section of the apartments also provides generous one-and-a-half storey high living rooms with full height windows and balconies facing outward from the blocks, taking advantage of the wonderful canal-side location. Utilising a Combined Heat and Power system, Budenberg Haus generates its own heat and electricity in one single, highly efficient process. This significantly reduces carbon emissions for up to 50% less than conventional power generation! http://studioyat.com/projects/budenberg-haus/
