New Build, Within a Conservation Area

Practice

Studio Wolsey Ltd

59 Sydner Road , London , London , N16 7UF , United Kingdom

These new houses are located in the rear garden of a large detached house in Brighton. The owners of the existing house wanted to maximise the potential of their garden, and appointed Studio Wolsey to look at options for it’s development. Studio Wolsey carried out a feasibility study for proposed garden development and settled on a scheme for two new houses. There are several other properties along the same road which have garden developments, so there was a definite precedent in the area. We designed the two new houses to be contemporary in style, to contrast with the existing house, while complimenting it through material choice and form. The two new houses are semi-detached, one with a pitched roof to match the existing house and one with a flat roof to match the neighbours. The material palette consists of timber cladding, render board and dark grey metal windows.
