Writ in Water, is a major architectural artwork by Mark Wallinger, in collaboration with Studio Octopi, for the National Trust at Runnymede, Surrey. The artwork is the first permanent commision for Trust New Art. The artwork celebrates the enduring legacy and ongoing significance of Magna Carta. Two concentric circles of rammed stone form a labyrinth that leads to a reflective pool bearing Clause 39, Magna Carta. Set in the heart of this ancient landscape, Writ in Water reflects upon the founding principles of democracy, and provides visitors with a space for reflection and contemplation. In 2019 the project won an RIBA South East Award, Civic Trust Awards Commendation, MacEwen Award Shortlisting and EU Mies Award Nomination.
