Thames Baths CIC (www.thamesbaths.com) is a social enterprise founded by Studio Octopi for re-introducing swimming in the River Thames. The proposals are focused on the central London stretch of the river but could occur on any river. Imagine swimming in a floating pool, surrounded by reeds that frame tantalising views of the city around you. Thames Baths will filter water taken from the river to meet the highest swimming water standards for natural pools. The water will be then be heated to ensure use for 12 months of the year by everyone, young and old. The project has been covered extensively in the global press with over 30 public speaking events undertaken including a TEDx talk in 2015. It featured in major exhibitions on urban swimming in 2019 (Swim City, Basel) 2016 (Urban Plunge, Barcelona) & 2014 (Urban Plunge, London). In 2015 the project featured on crowdfunding site Kickstarter and raised £142,000 in 30 days. The campaign established 1200+ Founding Members who now form the core to the community supporting Thames Baths Community Interest Company. The ideas were launched in 2013 as part of the ‘London As It Could Be Now’ programme, an open call ideas project, developed by Royal Academy of Arts, The Architecture Foundation and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.
