Alteration to existing property
Hellrosa House is named after the candy pink RAL colour that was used across the metalwork of the extension. The pink and green reference the client’s 1975 screenprint by Andy Warhol, ‘Mick Jagger’. This hung in the original dark and damp kitchen. Jagger’s pout kept the place energised. It seemed strangely obtuse that the client, famous for his black and white photography, should have a new kitchen extension inspired by the Warhol colours. So, we went with it. The reconstituted stone kitchen counter top and matching lacquered cupboard fronts lead through to a dining space with views across the garden. Exposed box frame steels mark the back of the house. A Miesian ‘pencil’ column, dipped in pink, props up the extension roof. Through the pivot door, a modest wraparound plinth is finished in the same terrazzo as that used on the floor and extension cladding. Stepping off the plinth into the gravel garden, the matching aggregate runs full width interspersed with planting. Along the closet wing’s side elevation, three new openable windows are punched through the brickwork. The two windows have new hand cast white concrete lintels. Carefully articulated rainwater goods continue the interplay of new and existing. Having lived for years in the fog of the previous kitchen, the client wanted the lightest touch on the ground, ample daylight and a contemporary space to hang his artwork. The delicate propping of the extension roof on the ‘pencil’ column offers the simplest of shelters that reconnects house and garden.
