This unique self-build project embodies the spirit of the 21st-Century Master Builder by integrating design and construction for a home that is both high-quality and affordable. Our approach focused on simplicity and affordability, using modern techniques to create an open, spacious home that is easy to replicate while maintaining a sense of openness and celebrating nature - aligning with core Garden City principles. The brief was to extend the house to the side to create a large, open-plan kitchen and dining space angled toward the garden, including a compact shower room. Environmental factors were a key driver, demonstrating our commitment to value and sustainability through the use of low embodied carbon materials. This project serves as a sustainable self-build exemplar, showcasing how a straightforward, low-cost construction methodology can yield exceptional spaces without negatively impacting the environment. Utilising the latest low-carbon methods, the design features offsite manufactured hemp panels to create a fully demountable scheme that can be easily repurposed, leading to zero waste.
