A truly unique transformation of a run-down house to a stunning family home. Studio J was approached by the new home owners of a tired 1960’s dormer bungalow that had previously been poorly extended and had an awkward internal layout. The brief was given to remove the old extension and replace it with some striking and contemporary architecture along with remodelling the existing interior and upgrading the throughout. The extension was to the side of the house within a very restricted part of the site. Care was taken to ensure strict planning requirements were satisfied while still creating something modern and exciting in response to positive elements of the original house. A bold choice was made to go with zinc cladding on the roof and areas of the first floor walls to give a contemporary look whilst also complementing the new slate tiles to the main roof. With some clever design we were able to get the pitch of the roof to match that of the original house despite a much deeper footprint. Externally, new render, cladding , aluminium windows and doors combine with a new garden terrace to visually connect the two elements together. Internally the brief was to create a new large entrance hall, along with open plan kitchen dining and living rooms. The previously dark and cramped entrance was made wider and opened up to the roof. We re-positioned a new staircase and these elements provide a bright and airy entrance with a real “wow!” factor. The rest of the accommodation consists of 5 bedrooms (including a large master suite with walk-in wardrobe), house bathroom, 3 en-suites and utility room.
