Dingleton Boiler House, Melrose, Scottish Borders This architectural project refurbishes a former boiler house in the Scottish Borders into 5 residential units. The derelict building, built in 1974 at Dingleton, Melrose, was listed by Historic Scotland the same week the application was lodged. This marks an increasing recognition of its original architect, Peter Womersley, and his oeuvre. The three original concrete hoppers are dramatically expressed in the living areas. The coal conveyor is extended to form a unit on three levels and the top two floors house the largest unit whose roof terrace gives soaring views to the nearby Eildon hills. Every unit has an external amenity space either carved into the building or as an extension of its form. The original chimney can be used again for solid fuel stoves. The proposed conversion, designed by Studio DuB, has now won Planning and Listed Building consent. It also won Best Proposed Building at the Roses Design Awards.
