Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II*
Easter Saltoun Hall, Pencaitland A bold intervention to resolve two key fundamental day to day issues for the owners of Easter Saltoun Hall, the largest apartment in this converted category A Listed Building by William Burn, namely: improving the incredibly basic -given the status of the building- kitchen and dining facilities; and a sustainable solution to provide heating and hot water for the subjects. A new kitchen space is formed, thermally independent of the existing north gallery with its own ceiling of contemporary vaulting inspired from the original. This allows cooking and dining for the first time since the property was acquired in the 1970's in comfort, allowing also more daylight into the space and offering a more generous and properly arranged sequence of spaces. The design of the new ceiling allows glimpses of the original gothic gallery vaulting via carefully positioned and sized trapezoidal apertures. Marbled linoleum ‘click’ flooring in strong colours define the kitchen / dining space within the ‘gallery’. A biomass heating system was designed and installed in the ‘Hall’ basement. The old combo of oil-fired boiler and little used storage heaters has been removed and for the first time in c.40 years of occupation Easter Saltoun Hall will has whole house central heating with upper and lower level zone control.
