We designed rear extensions for a pair of terraced homes in Plumstead, Greenwich. From initially similar briefs we worked closely with each of the home owners to draw out and express their personalities and ideas in each of the designs. One scheme has an open plan kitchen and dining room space with a dramatically angled timber roof that appears to grow from a small shower room hidden in a slatted timber pod. The timber is continued through to the outside, where angled timber strips are used to clad the exterior elevation. This project also shows a little can go a long way with careful design and low cost materials. A handmade chunky concrete worktop that they helped install, contrasts and compliments the simple Ikea kitchen units. The neighbouring scheme has a more pared back feel compared to their neighbour's more flamboyant approach with a more pared back interior and traditional London Stock Brick Walls and slate roof externally. Initial conversations with the planners were not supportive of a full width wrap around extension to the rear. However through massaging the shape and form along with the internal layout of the design, we achieved a functional arrangement of living spaces suitable for modern living without compromising the neighbouring amenity. Interest is also given Internally with the progression of spaces from front to back; one moves down from the rear reception room via a series of steps into the extension proper. In what could have been a utilitarian space, the steps mark a characterful transition from old to new with a large rooflight above casting a play of shadow and light upon an exposed brick wall.
