Within a Conservation Area
We were appointed to create a phased masterplan for an unusual Victorian house in a conservation area. This included extending the house at the rear to the upper level garden to create a new garden room, three additional ensuite bedrooms and the remodelling of the kitchen and living accommodation at the lower entrance level. Our research revealed that it was originally a coach house for a long since demolished mansion and was converted into family home in the early twentieth century adding many Arts and Crafts details such as the imposing staircase, stained glass bay windows and decorative plasterwork. Researching and taking the time to understand the building helped form our designs and discussions with the planners. The first completed phase has relocated the kitchen to the centre of the home forming a hub for family life. We also created a children’s den and a home office in the former kitchen. A bespoke kitchen design was developed using the concept that each piece cabinetry would read as a separate elements of furniture within the space. A glazed screen drawing on the original leaded glazing of the windows was built to separate the kitchen from the hall.
