We were our own clients for this project, which was undertaken to increase living space and improve the existing house configuration to better suit our family needs. The principal element of the project was to convert the existing under roof open sided car port into a new kitchen/ day space with adjoining utility room. We tried hard to work with the existing space, therefore the new kitchen was designed to cleverly utilise the existing car port opening with the incorporation of a new front door and bifold sliding doors. External to this a new timber deck was formed to create a new external inside/ outside space threshold that will be fully utilised in the warmer months. The project consisted of two build phases, the first forming the new kitchen and the second once phase one work completed into a new den/ music room. The existing window sill level was reduced with a larger window and lower sill to form a new window with a much lower bottom sill level. A new full length window seat/ storage space was designed across the window to promote quite relaxed contemplation of the garden. Not wanting the capital expense of relocating the existing water meter & stop cock, we worked around keeping the utility in place, therefore the window seat also accommodates a new water softener and supply to the original external garden water tap. The original poorly placed main entrance doorway into central hallway to rear of house was bricked up and a new full width window located from mid height. This simple adaption of the existing hallway has created a study/ hot desk area supporting home office and student study activities into the main hub of the house.
