The Black Barn is a rigorously environmental ‘paragraph 79’ family home inspired by the vernacular architecture of rural Suffolk. It reads as a floating sculptural form surrounded by wild grass meadow. The striking form evolved from environmental considerations including solar heat gain, shading and passive ventilation, establishing a dialogue with the seasonal and diurnal rhythms of the site. The scheme was granted planning permission in November 2015 under Paragraph 55 (now Paragraph 80) of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).
