Stride Treglown was the competition winner to provide a new 700sqm extension to the Watergate Bay Hotel, to house a new spa with treatment rooms, pool, living space, cafe, surf board storage and changing facilities. The brief for the spa was to provide ‘active relaxation’ for the hotel’s sporty/surfer clientele. In response to this, our proposal includes a 25m length pool with panoramic views of the bay and the surf below. The design of the building utilises the location and orientation of the site, maximising views and sunlight into the building, as well as creating a form that fits in with the surrounding cliffs and with the existing hotel above. The scheme also provides a new entrance to the hotel, solving existing accessibility issues and creating a more prominent entrance for hotel guests. Watergate Bay Hotel is listed as Britain’s number 1 seaside hotel under the Sunday Times ‘Ultimate 100 British Hotels’.
