Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) is an important catalyst for the regeneration of the local area, helping to raise attainment levels and aspirations of both its students and the local community. The area surrounding MAP adjoins an extremely deprived area. The Academy’s vision to improve the life chances of its students by creating a 'hub on the hill' - an all age learning campus providing different options, transferable skills and self confidence. This needs to be supported by an outward signal of change, which has been fundamental to our design development. The school’s central vision is to create an all age campus for lifelong learners, at the centre of an engaged, regenerated community. This proposal redevelops the existing MAP replacing most of the existing 1980’s building with new. The new build adjoins a small section of the 1980s building that is retained and refurbished. New links are established to the sports block and Esher buildings that are retained with minor improvements. The proposal significantly improves the school with major benefits for the pupils, teachers and the surrounding community. We have also designed and delivered a new primary free school on the campus, supporting the all age learning vision for the campus.
