The scheme moves away from the standard model of providing a single option of a 5 bed cluster to providing a range of accommodation types. Clusters range in size from 2 to 8 bed for the self-catering accommodation, 2 to 16 bed for the catered accommodation, with the building also incorporating a number of standalone studio rooms and also penthouse duplex apartments. The majority of the rooms are designed to be rearranged to provide conferencing accommodation outside of term times and as a result the development has received four stars from the Visit Britain tourism organisation. We have welcomed the University’s sustainable aspirations for this project and have achieved BREEAM excellent at pre-assessment stage; the building includes LED lighting, and highly efficient air source heat pumps instead of a traditional heating system, rainwater harvesting, solar water heating, green and brown roofs and seamlessly incorporates built-in bird and bat nest boxes in the external brickwork. Construction was completed in the summer of 2012 for the start of the academic year.
