Heartlands is a £35m Lottery Funded regeneration project that transformed Cornwall's most derelict urban area into an inspirational cultural landscape. Now designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site; Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, we developed the designs for 10 no. Grade II* and 6 no. Grade II listed buildings that form the historic centrepiece; Robinsons Shaft mining complex. Detailed discussions with English Heritage and the Local Conservation Officers ensured the scheme achieved Planning and Listed Building Consents without issue. We provided a traditional full service for architectural, conservation and lead-designer roles from RIBA Stages A - L and in-house support from our Town Planning and Inclusive Design teams to ensure the project was delivered both within budget and programme. The listed buildings were sympathetically and innovatively restored to an extremely high standard to allow its adoption as one of Cornwall's key interpretation sites for the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. The new-build elements were crafted to be complimentary to the existing language and form of Robinsons Shaft. The new interventions are contemporary in their design and resonate the essence of the place. Materials key to the region's historic and cultural identity, such as tin, copper and granite, appear throughout.
