The Filwood Green Business Park is a pioneering development for Bristol City Council and the HCA, providing a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ office and workshop space in Knowle West, Bristol. The project has been developed in close consultation with the local community and represents an important part of a wider masterplan for the Filwood Green area. It is the first building of its type in the South West to be built to such high environmental and sustainable standards and will be an important part of Bristol Green Capital 2015. A key focus for the design team was the reduction of carbon with a particular emphasis on preventing a ‘performance gap’ where buildings are designed as low carbon but emit more carbon than envisaged in operation. The building also uses high performance building materials and on-site energy generation to achieve a 40% CO2 reduction, saving an estimated 46 tonnes of carbon annually (equivalent to 276 double decker buses). The building provides office and industrial work spaces in a variety of sizes and has a Workhub at its heart. The Workhub is a dynamic space that facilitates interaction and provides a professional work environment for home-based or mobile entrepreneurs. The building will form an important landmark on Hengrove Way with the Hub’s vertical timber solar shading signalling the entrance to the Filwood Green development. With a range of desk spaces and meeting facilities, it is designed to deliver all the key ingredients for small businesses to flourish. Stride Treglown has provided landscape architecture, interior design and architecture services for the project.
