St Georges Lodge , 33 Oldfield Road , BATH , Somerset , BA2 3NE , United Kingdom
This striking project was taken through all the procurement stages from inception through to handing over the keys. The time span from first instruction, through planning, detailed design, tender and construction for this ?3.6m scheme took just two years. The building provides seven laboratories, classrooms, resource rooms and prep rooms, housed partly in the modified 1950's building and partly in bespoke new build extensions. New circulation routes have been created with a feature stair in the south west corner and ?street? accesses to the laboratories / teaching areas giving comfort and light to the gathering and commuting spaces. Reflections of the landscape in the glazing to the staircase create a fascinating tablet to the south elevation and conversely when circulating within the building, the glory of the Monkton Combe valley is revealed in a sequence of vistas from the stairwell, the maths classroom and from the ?street?. Each encapsulating its own unique view. The thermal performance of the retained building was much enhanced and active natural ventilation systems built in. Photovoltaic cell panels were installed into the roof and provide an operational education base. The delighted client took possession of the completed building in April 2008, from which point it has become the showcase of the school's aspiration to provide both excellent facilties and inspirational environments.
