This project seeks to provide our Client, Sainsbury’s, with a new Headquarters Campus in Ansty Park, Warwickshire. Together with our Client, our aim from the outset was to transcend the typically un-contextual and transient built form of the business park to create an architecture and environment with a sense of place and permanence. The proposals are centred round a cloistered landscaped square that forms the social heart of the scheme and serves as an organising device to connect two new three storey office buildings, an energy centre and car park building with two existing buildings. The built forms are set between a series of linear gardens and courtyards which provide seasonally protected external spaces to meet and relax. The architecture, materiality and landscape draw upon the notable local ‘campus’ precedents of Rugby School and Coombe Abbey. The red brick and pre-cast concrete piers and subtle hierarchy of the pre-cast concrete bands to the office buildings and cloister form rationally organised and elegantly proportioned openings that echo the local precedents, whilst the umber tone and vertical expression of the energy centre and car park’s metal cladding abstract the coppices found in the surrounding rural landscape.
