New Build
York Cottage , Major Yorks Road , TUNBRIDGE WELLS , Kent , TN2 5TP
The aim of the project was to re-locate the East Kent Yeomanry Military Museum from an inaccessible part of Hever Castle to 2 new buildings in a discreet part of the grounds. The buildings needed to provide easy access for veterans as well as being more appealing to younger generations. The 2 buildings are grouped in the format of a military camp in a woodland setting together with an armoured car and field gun used by the Yeomanry. The lightweight structures are on 'stilts' to minimise root impact and are covered in olive drab canvas to resemble a pair of large army tents. The museum of artefacts telling the history of the regiment is in one building and the other provides a classroom/lecture facility. The entire grouping of tents and vehicles is seasonally concealed between stretched camouflage netting. This is one of the forward looking projects that have been and are being carried out by the Castle to promote greater public engagement with history.
