Stephen Kavanagh Architects were commissioned to renovate a double-height flat in a converted Victorian schoolhouse. The existing flat, though highly flawed, came brimming with possibilities, including an incredible double height space with dramatic arched windows. The clients' brief was to upgrade the flat from an open mezzanine space into a usable home with contained bedrooms. The layout also had to be rearranged to avoid the stairs creating a dead space at the centre of the flat. Our concept pivoted on creating a warm, intimate series of mezzanine bedrooms and a bright, open and flexible ground floor.
