Within a Conservation Area, New Build
Stephen Davy Peter Smith Architects Ltd
5a Underwood Street , London , N1 7LY , United Kingdom
This residential led scheme on Tottenham High Road, London comprises four retail units, and 39 homes (45% Shared ownership / 55% affordable rent). Though predominantly a new build scheme, it includes the refurbishment of 596 Tottenham High Road, which is locally listed. The street frontage falls within Scotland Green Conservation Area and we worked closely with the conservation officer to meet his, and our Client’s aspirations. Additional site constraints included a Quaker burial ground, underground river and overlooking issues. The new buildings are arranged at the rear of the awkwardly shaped site in simple terraces. This creates a series of courtyards and a sense of place within the development. Traditional materials were chosen for the facades, including brickwork and timber, and crisp detailing defines the simple, clean elevations. Construction commenced in March 2011 and despite the partially built scheme being burnt-out during the Summer riots of 2011, the scheme was completed in October 2012.
