The Client, a charity, had been given 814m2 space within an existing sports centre to promote science to the community as an educational resource. Our brief was to create a flexible space for science-based exhibits. Our approach included use of colourful playful materials to create a series of environments to aid learning. Analysis of the space determined that though it was large and open, it had limited flexibility. A key design decision was to incorporate a ‘pit’, a double height volume within the space, which could provide a different experience (a show or activity) away from the main space.
