Stephen Davy Peter Smith Architects Ltd
5a Underwood Street , London , N1 7LY , United Kingdom
Bright Buttons is a private day nursery for 39 children, set up by Stephen Davy Peter Smith Architects on the ground floor of their office building in Hoxton. The existing layout of the three storey building required careful thought to create separate entrances to the nursery and office. The practice occupies the top two floors with the nursery taking up the entire ground floor. Relocating the architect’s ground floor reception and meeting rooms upstairs was phased so the practice could continue using the building throughout the fit out. The carpark to the rear was split in two allowing the practice to retain several car parking spaces whilst providing a generous external play area for the nursery. The external space is partly grassed and planted creating a green oasis in this urban location. The internal spaces are characterized by brightly coloured walls and flowing spaces; folding doors provide additional flexibility to the main play rooms. Carefully positioned sitting places and windows (child height) ensure the spaces are enjoyed by both adults and children.
