The Fitzherbert Community Hub in East Brighton is a collaborative effort involving the East Brighton Catholic Parish, Voices in Exile, The Real Junk Food Project, and Brighton Table Tennis Club. We played a key role in providing design services for the internal alteration, refurbishment, and extension of the parish hall and former convent school. The goal was to create a practical space, including a community cafe, food bank, venue, and general community facilities. Our design emphasises inclusivity, with a focus on connecting with the adjacent table tennis club and enhancing accessibility through a platform lift. The courtyard redesign, featuring purple/grey tiles and discreet air source heat pumps, reflects our commitment to integration and sustainability. We addressed internal challenges by raising levels, minimising obstacles, and implementing acoustic treatments to improve participation. The social impact is significant. The Real Junk Food Project serves over 300 hot meals compared to 50 meals previously. Brighton Table Tennis Club has been able to expand their coaching sessions for players with long term health conditions including those with Parkinson’s Disease, wheelchair users and mental health conditions. They are working with local schools to provide hot meals alongside coaching sessions. Voices in Exile note that their refugee clients feel more integrated by being able to meet others in the cafe whilst accessing their services. St John the Baptist Church hosts meetings for people suffering from dementia, mental health training and the joint Anglican/Catholic anti-slavery group. The local NHS Trust socially prescribes to the Hub and there are school clubs, ESOL students’ sessions, conferences and opportunities for groups to collaborate and network. The project was a finalist for the Construction Excellence Award in 2023, shortlisted for the Blue Badge Award 2023 and won two Sussex heritage Awards.
