Bristol
£10m to £49.99M
The new four storey flagship store for House of Fraser sets the benchmark for a £500 million retail and leisure redevelopment of the Broadmead centre. Creating a dramatically strong, sculptural form inspired by the earth’s shifting tectonic blocks and plates with faults which are treated as glazed lit inserts to break up the solid volumes and featuring large glass panels with abstract patterns etched into the glazing. The vast urban scale of the building is humanised with tactile, organic materials such as Portland stone, featuring fossils and cast bronze panels incorporating artwork in their surface texture. Integrating sculptural artwork, projections and a large double height display window, the store acts as a beacon from Bristol’s M4 and will provide a landmark and a gateway to the city.
