This is a conversion of a redundant pigsty. Working with an existing building can bring a series of challenges – with this project the overall height was limited requiring the clever use of internal volumes. Stanton Andrews embraced this challenge, wherever possible opening up the ceilings through to the roof, providing double height spaces and extended internal views. The dilapidated structure was stripped back allowing contemporary interventions to be inserted and airy extensions to be added. Inside, there is a generous family room at the heart of the plan. The kitchen acts as a congregation hub around which family and friends can sit and chat. A separate lounge and study provide more intimate and private accommodation. Super-large windows provide fabulous views across the Lancashire countryside. Environmental considerations were at the forefront of the design, incorporating high levels of insulation and performance glazing throughout. External walls were clad with an insulated render system helping to minimise heat loss whilst also providing a crisp, modern appearance.
