Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
1st Floor Old Town Hall , 354 Mare Street , Hackney , London , E8 1HR , United Kingdom
This semi-detached house on Hemmingford Road is a Grade II listed building in a conservation area with its garden facade overlooking Barnsbury Wood. We were asked to upgrade this historical building, opening up the basement and living areas, increasing the natural flow of light, and adapting it for modern living. With our consultant services engineer, we devised a scheme involving the construction of a double-height glazed facade to the rear elevation, with a layer of water running down from the top acting as a climatic control device during the summer months. The planning process involved negotiations with both the local authority and English Heritage. The result is a striking addition to a historic building which compliments the rear elevation telling an interesting story of evolution with materials & modern construction techniques.
