Perhaps it's that the Scandinavians have figured out how to brighten up homes in this Northern Hemisphere which is so sadly short of natural light. Maybe it's their innovative use of cutting edge materials or maybe it's just that they are so effortlessly stylish without seeming to try too hard. Originally purchased in 2004, it took seven months of hard work overseen by Spheron Architects to transform the property into the show stopper it became. The property was fully renovated with a new open-plan layout, an L-shaped rear and side extension and the creation of a large living, dining and kitchen area. Stepping into the living room of this large flat in West Kensington, it was easy to forget the grey dreary days that we're so used to. The house itself is in a row of elegant detached townhouses on the edge of the Gunter Estate Conservation area (on the corner of Edith Road and Auriol Road). The bleached oak floor reflected the light streaming through the windows and the skylights above, while the sleek white units in the kitchen looked cool without being clinical. Perhaps the most striking thing about this open-plan space, however, was the bi-fold doors leading out onto the 50 ft garden. It broke down the barriers between the indoors and the outdoors, heightening the sense of endless summer. The generously sized master suite featured ample storage while the en suite bathroom featured stylish snakeskin tiles and a rain shower. The flat’s other large bathroom featured a huge double ended bath tiled in Carrera marble mosaics. Ethnic artefacts added character to the space along with dashes of colour. Unsurprisingly this flat was snapped up very quickly and we are sure the new owners are making the most of that garden.
