Stockton Riverside College was a challenging project that involved a complicated rationalisation of two existing facilities on a reclaimed brownfield site in Stockton. The constantly evolving educational environment demanded that flexibility was a key consideration of this design. Our innovative solution split the building in two. The two halves are divided by a lively dual level street which provides a dynamic point of focus for the students and a stimulating place in which to meet. On one side of the street the dedicated teaching and learning spaces have been grouped together around a striking computer hall. Each of these spaces has been carefully designed and considered to bring extra value to the educational experience. The unique multi-curved roof supported on steel ‘trees’ enables the use of a low energy natural stack ventilation system to resolve the problem of the heat generated by a large number of computers and building users.
