Major PFI project involved staged demolition and rebuilding of the 1906 Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), as well as the new build Northern Cancer Centre and Renal Unit, with an additional 800 place multi storey car park at the Freeman Hospital. At the heart of the plan is an ambitious programme to move key services from the General Hospital site. The practice was responsible for all enabling and decanting works prior to the main construction phase, as well as work to the many listed buildings affected by the proposals, as well as internal refurbishment of existing buildings. Work at the Freeman Hospital site also included a new Energy Centre extension to the existing Power House and a new chimney. Enabling works at the RVI included complex ramp connections between several existing buildings at different floor levels, as well as a Pathology Department, Radiology Department and a mortuary. The former nurses’ home was also refurbished for use as clinical offices for the duration of the construction works. With extensive knowledge of both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman sites, the practice made a significant contribution to achieving demanding programme targets.
