This project required the conversion of two period flats in a Victorian terrace house to create a family home. The strategy has been to completely open up the ground floor to create a large open-plan space with a sitting room flowing into the kitchen and out into the garden: a family space, where the children of the house can play freely while their parents keep a close eye on them. This intervention required significant structural changes to the ground floor, with the resultant steel beams exposed and painted black to create a strong feature, rather than being hidden behind plaster. The blackness of the beams is also picked out in smaller features in the space, such as fixtures and fittings, window surrounds, doors and radiators. Douglas fir flooring in a soft warm finish from Dinesen was chosen to unite the ground floor-spaces and the stairs. The upper floors have also been refurbished, converting an existing living room, dining room and kitchen into master, and guest ensuite bedrooms. A small terrace and spiral stairs leads down to the garden. On the top floor, space has been created for two children's bedrooms and a bathroom.
