Prototype boutique hotel villa for a stunning site at Passekudah beach on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, for an established local hotelier. Four suites, shaded lounging areas, a stylish swimming pool and a roof top bar and sun deck was designed to provide modern, stylish and comfortable facilities for discerning guests. Full height glazing and wide cantilevered floors give a sense of openness and blur the boundaries between internal spaces and surrounding nature. Elements inspired by traditional Sri Lankan architecture such as projecting soffits and folding screens provide shading, while water ponds enhance natural ventilation and cooling. Design not only introduces vernacular flavour, but also improves internal comfort and reduce reliance on air conditioning, resulting in lower energy consumption.
