Simpson & Brown were retained by the National Trust to act as consultant architects for Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, since 1990. During this period, we have prepared two quinquennial reports and a conservation plan, and have been responsible for a number of major phases of repair work. 1992 - the castle was complete re-roofing, together with substantial repairs to the parapets and chimneys. 1996 - a major consolidation and reharling the exposed and inaccessible north elevation, along with repairs to windows and other external features. 2000 - an ambitious civil engineering project to stabilise the eroded south rock face and rebuild the long approach ramp and fence. 2008 - a new award winning Ticket Hut at the base of the external ramp, on a very sensitive and exposed site. 2015-16 - Surveys, investigations and trial repairs and in preparation for the major works project 2016-18 - Major repairs to the external fabric, alterations to the lead roofs to improve drainage, and comprehensive repairs to the windows including the reinstatement of many of Lutyens opening casements, extensive consolidation of the masonry and the reharling and limewashing of the north elevation. 2022 - Schedules prepared for priority works to the wider landscape.
