A destination restaurant and lounge bar at the Barbican Centre, one of two new spaces (including Barbican Foodhall), which would link to each other via the outside terrace treatment, but which were also strikingly different. The ambition was to elevate the Centre’s hospitality offer to match the Barbican’s world-renowned reputation for arts and performances. The design approach for the bold and striking Lounge area was to strip back and celebrate the wonderful architecture and materiality of the Barbican (including its concrete ceilings and aggregate walls), whilst animating the spaces with striking lighting (by .PSLAB), surfaces (including a poured resin peacock blue floor, colour-matched to a photo of the Barbican Lake in Summertime), feature areas and vintage and bespoke furniture in blues, greens and reds by SHH and designer Stefan Bench. The kitchen is clad, floor-to-ceiling, in solid timber, whilst the striking 14m bar, which continues through the glazing onto the outside terrace, is in black glass with a black mosaic bar front.
