The original Percy Gee Building was opened by the Queen in 1958 and is one of the University’s larger buildings. After the successful transformation by SEH in 2010 of most of the Percy Gee Building, the home of the University of Leicester Students’ Union - now providing food and retail units, informal meeting and social learning space, Student Union offices, student society activity spaces and bar and nightclub/gig venues (the O2 Academy), the University developed the East Wing, in order to provide an enhanced mixed-use facility of an appropriate scale facing on to the University’s main square, to better serve the Union and the University. The facility provides an expanded food court and flexible floor space for teaching and learning, and computer space. The extension sits within the central square of the main campus of the University of Leicester and acts as a new focal point for socialising for students, staff and visitors. Externally the building features a striking glazed façade. Internally, existing historic features of the building have been retained on the lines of crossover from the demolition works and provide an interesting context between the old and the new. The project provides a striking new visual focal point to the central campus, enhanced landscaping to the surrounding areas, improving the overall student experience with a high-quality space and facilities.
