Basement Extension in Fulham, London As architects in London, Shape Architecture has designed and built many basement extensions, many of which have been in Fulham and all awarded through client recommendation. It was whilst working on this basement extension at 69 Ellerby Street that we were asked to work on a similar basement project at the neighbouring property 71 Ellerby Street. This is now our third such project in Ellerby Street in Fulham. Fulham Extensions Shape Architecture has undertaken many rear and side extensions in Fulham, many of which form part of new basement extensions and whole house refurbishment projects. Here, a new flat roof construction was formed with a large roof light set into it over the location of the new internal basement stair. A series of smaller rooflights set into the new extension ensures that an excellent level of daylight is achieved with the benefit of a number of views of the sky. Fulham Architects: Feature Staircase As Architects working throughout Fulham a key design feature that we have much experience of designing are stairs and in the case of basement extensions the stair that connects the ground floor to the basement below. In this project the basement stair sits within a generous void located in the open plan kitchen and has a large roof light set above it. The stair therefore brings much daylight and sunlight into the basement and permits extensive views of the sky from the basement. Located in the centre of the basement plan it helps create a light and spacious feel to the basement extension on moving from the Ground floor to the basement below. Basement Extension in Fulham: Internal Layout The basement layout is centered around the feature staircase and the feeling of light and space it creates. Towards the garden is a large family room. This sits opposite large glazed doors giving onto the garden light well. The basement family room is well served by a full height storage unit running the length of the wall, also designed by Shape Architecture. Bordering the stair is a wine store and along this central spine of accommodation are various other rooms that include a gym, utility room, plant room and WC. Further accommodation gives onto a light well at the front garden and includes one large room with en-suite and kitchenette facilities. Basement Conversions in Fulham: Internal Refurbishment At upper levels a new pod room has been added. Shape Architecture have designed and built many pod rooms in Fulham and throughout London. As a form of roof extension they add valuable additional space, which in the instance of this project provided a new bedroom coupled with extensive storage. At first floor level a new master suite has been created. This comprises a walk-in-wardrobe leading onto an en-suite. The en-suite incorporates a walk-in shower and bath, vanity unit and WC. It is filled with light. The uppermost level houses further bedrooms and a children’s bathroom. At ground floor a front reception room gives off from the hallway. Adjacent to this is a study which enjoys views over the feature stair towards the garden and up to the stair light well. A downstairs cloakroom and below stairs WC have also been included. The hall leads onto a large family kitchen dining room with a long run of kitchen units and a kitchen island alongside sitting and dining spaces. The room is full of light from a number of sources and has excellent views of the garden. Basement Conversions in Fulham: Inside-Outside Relationship Large format glazed doors run the width of the garden elevation and provide an excellent physical and visual relationship between inside and outside. Set over the garden light well is a full width glass panel. This alternates clear and semi opaque glass bands. Connecting the basement light well to the garden is a simple and elegant stair with glass balustrade. Basement Conversions in Fulham: Bespoke Furniture Throughout the project Shape Architecture has designed a series of bespoke furniture, ranging from wardrobes to book cases and study desks. These have been designed with the client to ensure a level of continuity with the spaces around and to provide exactly what the client requires from these pieces of furniture. Throughout our basement conversions in Fulham and other residential projects in London we design a wide range of bespoke fitted furniture from contemporary styles to more traditional, utilizing a variety of materials from MDF with edgings and spray finish to Hardwood with hand painted finishes.
