Basement Extension in Fulham Shape Architecture was awarded this project in Hurlingham Road, Fulham through Client recommendation. The project concerns the creation of a basement extension and the remodeling of the ground floor, alongside side and rear extensions at ground floor level. The key feature of this basement extension in Fulham is an elegant glass box located between the interior and the garden and forming one side of the garden lightwell. As a striking addition to the property the glass box fulfils many functions. It houses the stair connecting the ground floor to the basement and provides significant light into the basement extension and views out. In addition as one moves between levels there is always a strong sense of the surrounding garden. On entry into the large kitchen dining space the glass box is immediately apparent and takes the eye towards the garden. Having located the stairs ‘outside’ of the building more floor space is made available at both ground and basement floors. Given the prominence of this glazed feature an elegant framed glass structure was specified. Fulham Basements: The Connection Between Inside & Outside Between the kitchen and the garden sits the rear lightwell over which a glass platform sits. At the edge of the glass platform a steel grille is located to provide vent to the basement level of the lightwell. A series of clear and sand blasted strips run across the glass platform. Amongst the numerous basement extensions in Fulham that we have designed and built the majority have utilized a glass platform over the lightwell. The alternative is a glass bridge with glass balustrading. This naturally creates a greater feeling of openness between the basement lightwell and the spaces around it. Fulham Basement Extensions: The Garden The rear extension and the glass pod and bridge have extended into the existing garden. Various simple and elegant boundary treatments, planters and seats have made for an interesting garden that sits well with the architecture. The architecture in Fulham of terraced houses often includes a small pocket garden and these are successful when providing a spill out space from the interior and an interesting visual and physical connection to and from the interior. Fulham Basement Extensions: The Basement Layout The floor plan of this Fulham basement extension is divided into three distinct zones. Located at the garden side and accessed from the interior stair is the family room. The interior feels open and spacious. Giving onto the family room are a series of rooms fulfilling the functional requirements of the basement and these include Storage, Utility Room, WC and Plant Space. The third zone is a large room giving onto the street side lightwell with en-suite and kitchenette facilities.
