Client: Conwy Adventure Leisure Location: Dolgarrog, Conwy Surf Snowdonia is a large extreme sports destination at Dolgarrog in the Conwy Valley, North Wales. It houses a unique artificial 30,000sqm wave surfing lake, the world’s first commercial application of the technology, with state of the art buildings to cater for spectators, sports people and campers. Surf Snowdonia uses Wave Garden® technology, pioneered by a group of surfer-engineers in San Sebastián, Spain, which creates a good-length wave (up to 150 metres if you ride it the whole way) for all ability levels. Expert surfers can surf the two-metre peak next to the central pier, intermediates can ride a 1.2 metre section in the middle, while beginners can develop their skills on the white water at the edge. This triple-function makes it great for families and mixed-ability groups. seven designed and delivered several buildings for this exciting leisure destination including the main ‘Hub’ which houses the reception, a café bar and changing facilities as well as the ‘Activity Building’ home to the soft play shack, coffee bar and surf retail zone. The ‘Hub’ boasts an impressive 50m long glazed elevation overlooking the main attraction, the surfing lake, giving spectators unhindered views of the surfing action from the main restaurant and retail spaces. The Hub also contains the main reception, wet suit and surf board hire and changing facilities. The ‘Family Activity Building’ contains the soft play shack, a multi-decked children’s assault course as well as a coffee shop overlooking the ‘Crash and Splash’ lagoon proffering a view of fun watery antics including ‘blobbing’ and a watery assault course with giant spinning balls, monkey bars, climbing wall, balance beam and rope bridge! The Surf Shacks provide surf board storage, workshop space and lifeguard welfare facilities and the Camp Site building accommodates the campsite reception and office, lifeguard welfare facilities as well as bathroom facilities for campers. The site is located on the edge of Snowdonia National Park based on a former aluminium works. Surf Snowdonia recycled and re-used materials on the site and used 100% rain water to fill the surf lake
