Client: Northern School of Art Location: Middlesbrough Seven is leading the design of a new specialist creative arts FE College. The Northern School of Art is unique in its offer in the north of England and this project will see the relocation of the School’s existing campus to a new town centre site as a flagship for the regeneration of a Middlesbrough gateway. The scheme comprises over 5,000m2 of accommodation over three floors, providing a range of studios for fine art, textiles, fashion, digital media, photography and 3D product design. A concrete frame offers a robust internal finish with its exposed thermal mass moderating the internal temperatures. The design of the terracotta panel envelope is derived from the long tradition of ceramics and fabrics courses provided by the School. The campus, in its new central location, will inspire students for years to come. The second-to-none education and training on offer will give them the skills they need to succeed, as creative sectors begin to play an ever bigger role in the region’s economy.
