New Build
The project involved the restoration, renovation and extension of a listed school building to provide a new city library for Blankenberge, a resort town on the North Sea coast of Belgium. The design concept involved the creation of a variety of rooms for different uses by allowing the character of existing spaces to inform the quality of the new. The various areas are given organizational clarity by a new circulation arcade, which forms an additional layer to the rear of the existing building. New annexes on either side of the main building are connected to the arcade to form a ribbon-like structure, continuing the overall scale of the street frontage.
